Maynooth Lectures
Last night I was at NUIM for some lectures about college courses and the jobs you can get afterwards. Well I should have been.
The story was that each person went to two lectures, one at 7.30 and one at 8.30. My first one was Information Technology and Computers.
I thought this was absolutely awful and completely useless. Firstly there weren’t many there, which I was surprised. Then, of those who were there, I’d say about 50% of them were scumbags who were in that room because A) they couldn’t find the room they were meant to be in so just rambled in and hoped for the best or B) They think they can do computers because they love going on bebo.
Of course some people there seemed to know what was going on, but so many scumbags there (half of whom were arriving late) really annoyed me. Sorry buddy, I think you’re looking for advanced knackerism down the hall there.
The talk itself was just by these two women who work in IT Alliance. I got absolutely nothing out of it. It was basically them talking utter shite about their company then giving stories about how different employees had come to work there. I was under the impression that this lecture would have been a nuetral broad view of the course and what to do with it, not a recruiting effort from some company.
Next up for me was Sales and Marketing, which was pretty packed, and should have been held in one of the lecture rooms instead of the shitty classroom we were thrown into. The guy talking to us was actually very very good. It seemed he hadn’t done anything of the sort before, as he asked a few times if how he was going about it was okay with us, and generally looking for a response more than most lecturers seem to do.
But he was experienced in his field. He was a genuine salesman/marketer who was doing pretty well. He had a pretty interesting backstory too. He was dyslexic (which let me forgive the 3 or so spelling/grammar errors I’d spotted in his powerpoint presentation!) and joined the army at fourteen after forging his birth cert. I also liked the classy suit he had on.
He taught me a few things, and reiterated a few things I’d learned from my online work, so I knew he wasn’t a bullshitter. I think everyone came out of that agreeing that it was a worthwhile talk and we’d learned something.
Also, with the salary sums I saw in there, I’m really considering a career in sales/marketing, so he really did a good job.
Apologies for the language of this post, but some of the stuff at the start really did annoy me (thus, I’ve filed this under “Ranting” also).
