Fixing my blog
Yesterday I posted about the stuff I wanted to get done on this blog. I’ve done well enough in my opinion, considering I know nothing when it comes to coding, I managed to wing it a bit and get some stuff sorted out, using various plugins, guides, and some quality guesswork on my part.
Here’s the checklist I had, and beside each in bold is how I did.
- Begin looking for a design for the header - Have started a cheap ass ($20) contest on this thread for someone to design this. Anyone willing to do this, either head onto that thread and post, or give me a shout and we’ll talk.
- Sort the blogroll - This was easy, just take out the links I didn’t want in there, and put in the ones I did.
- Sort some ads - Again, an easy enough task. I’ve put in a “Your Ad Here” button that links to the advertise page, and then some links for some folk I like, which I’ll change around soon for an affiliate button or if I get an advertiser.
- Find a way to do the “archive” page. Done, see the archive link at the top of the page. Thanks to smemon for his efforts at helping me, but I found an easier way, which I’ll be posting about soon, to show him up
That’ll show ya not to ever talk about “kicking my ass”
- Decide on these two “Favourite Posts” and “Most Commented Posts” things at the top. Ugh. I messed with these, and had them both working, and then just had to change the images for them, which wouldn’t have been hard. Then they started messing up on me, and in truly testosterone filled fashion (edit : Check the alliteration baby!)I got pissed off and decided I didn’t like them there that much anyway, and just put them in the sidebar instead. I’ll hopefully post about how to do this also, as the “Popular Posts” is a nice addition, and very easy to do.
- The “Subcribe” button at the side. Firstly, I need to spell the word “Subscribe” correctly from now on. Secondly, I think this is a great demonstration of how skilled I am when it comes to coding. At the moment this is completely screwed up looking, but I’m half way there! It shows I can wing it to a certain point, but when there’s some sort of complication, I’m done, and need to get someone else to sort it. I’ve asked for help on a forum, but if anyone here thinks they can help, check this thread.
- The time/date of posts. Again, thanks to smemon for “coming to my rescue” on this. I said yesterday I thought I knew the code to put in, and it turns out I did, but smemon showed me the right file to put it in. Though my code is easier and shorter than the one he’s on about
- [edit] Right I’ve just discovered an issue with the page layout when you go to view a post on it’s own or post comments. Argh! Gonna let the theme coder or smemon have a look at this. I dare not even try sort this. To see the problem yourself, click the title of this post (or any other post) and note that the background and sidebars go on a blaydin’ mad one.
- Any other problems I think of between now and then, or anything you guys remind me of. Haven’t found anything else.
So I don’t think I did too bad. I’d say the whole process did take me between 1hr-2hrs, but I got distracted a lot. I’m currently drinking a nice cold beer to calm down from the stressful work! There’s nothing more frustrating than being someone who knows nothing about coding, who then has to go around fixing coding. Thanks to all who helped me, I appreciate it greatly. There’s still some stuff to get fixed, but I think I took steps towards fixing anything that was out of my hands. Please let me know if there’s anything about the blog you think needs fixing, or any additions you’d like to see
