Doing the work pays off

For the past week and a half I’ve been really trying to focus on my schoolwork and basically stop fucking about, since the time I have from now until my leaving cert (the exam which will decide what university I’ll be going to) is dwindling away, and it’s all starting to hit me. So lately I’ve been making timetables and sticking to them fairly well. The end result is that I’ve been going in each day with all my homework done and to a reasonable standard, and I haven’t been up until too late any of the nights either (previously I could be up until 2am with homework, not having started it until far too late).

A test of my work came this week when I had both a Physics exam and a Maths exam. I’m clawing on to higher level maths at the moment, which is considered one of the more difficult subjects, and each week it seems more and more people are dropping down to ordinary level.

So the Physics test was due Tuesday. Normally this’d mean cramming Monday night and before class on Tuesday. But now I’m a nerd, I made notes on Sunday night, and then just had to go over them before the test. It went pretty well I feel, and I’ll be getting the results on Friday hopefully.

Then the dreaded maths test. It was on Matrices, which is a subject we had to teach ourselves over the Christmas holidays. Again I made notes two nights beforehand, and then just had to do some quick revision before the test. The test went pretty damn well as far as Maths exams go, but I don’t want to say too much in case I end up doing worse than I thought, rendering me looking quite the fool.

The same thing goes for my online work. When I focus myself and close the other tabs in Firefox, and get working on a site or writing an ebook, I get results. The problem with me, and people in general, is that we’re all too lazy to just do the damn work we know we should do, or fear of failure puts us off. Close the social networking sites, turn off the tv, sign out of msn, and get some work done

Will this be the end of my ever restraining laziness? Meh.

Edit - By tomorrow I want : To have completed the transfer of WebmasterDiscounts onto the new server
To have completed my ebook and accompanying website and have it ready for launch.

Hi Mark, sorry if this is odd but I just stumbled accross your page when I was searching for LC stuff. I know the feeling of fucking about on the internet and then realising you’ve just wasted a few hours not studying!! A few of us are building an online site of leaving cert notes for just that reason, because it combines messing around on the internet (I always find myself on wikipedia reading random stuff!) and actually getting some study done.

The site is http://www.zulunotes.com, it only started a short while ago but we’re managing to get a fair few well written notes up there, and it’s growing as more and more people are joining each week. Maybe it’s something you wouldn’t be interested or maybe you’d find writing out notes helps like I do, but you should check it out all the same.
