Digitalise dammit!

This weekend some of my french homework had to be done online. Because of this, the homework didn’t seem like as much of a chore, probably because I associate being on the computer with leisure time. But even so, it was much handier this way, and this led me to thinking that way more of our school work should be done on a computer. Ask teenagers these days if they prefer typing or writing in a copy, I reckon the majority would say typing.

Also, it’d be a lot more environmentally friendly this way, if we could type up our homework and send them to the teachers for correction. Another blogger, Smemon, is currently doing a paper watch at his college course. This means he totals up how many sheets of paper he receives every week. He’s doing a computer course, so every person doing it obviously owns a computer with internet access, and despite this, he gets hundreds of sheets of paper in handouts a week. It’s all so wasteful really. Also there’s a lot less chance you’ll lose your information when you have it saved onto your computer rather than on some sheet at the bottom of your bag.

Technology and computers are the way forward, and everyone knows this, so why aren’t we actually employing this knowledge?

It’s interesting how I always find myself typing out very long English essays into M$ Word. I find it MUCH better because I feel my typing can keep up with the speed of my thoughts and also I constantly change my mind so the backspace is a godsend.

After all that, I do a word count in the program, then transcribe to the ever-so-primitive pen and paper. I try to disguise the fact that I typed it up earlier by introducing deliberate errors.#

You should try it. It’s damn fast.

Great comment Alvis, I might actually give that a go for my next essay. But I don’t understand why you feel the need to disguise the fact that you typed it up?

yeah, i used to do that in school for essays / answers…

i’m much quicker typing than i am writing - not to mention neater ;-)

plus you have the word count, spell checker, and you can always call on it for future reference when it comes to exams / you have another essay down the line that overlaps with the theme..,

in college, we use a thing called ‘moodle’ which basically allows us to view and upload assignments online and get results online. It’s great, but not all lecturers use it /know how to use it, so that means we’re stuck with the old pen and paper
